Helen Antill
Landscape Artist

Daily walking was something I took up when I lived in the Brecon Beacons (now Bannau Brycheiniog). Our home was in a valley at the foot of Pen-Y-Fan. The mountain almost filled the view from the sitting room window, with a small strip of sky. It was stark, often dramatic, and always beautiful.

Being out in that landscape, in all seasons and in all weathers, created an awareness and sensitivity to it that I hadn’t had as an artist before. My painting became more animated, more gestural and intuitive.

I now live in the Shropshire Hills, which share a similar language of colour, form and texture. In watching the light morph, the rain fall, even the earth change colour, my paintings are now like collages of a hundred different distilled memories of this immersion. Intuitive and emotional responses to a landscape I have become preoccupied with.

Along with my own practice I have taught Art professionally for over 25 years.

Drawing and painting classes

NEW 6-week course

In the gorgeous rural location of Acton Scott village hall.

Starting on Wednesday 4th June.

Running for 6 consecutive Wednesdays, 2-4pm.

This course costs £140 and includes some basic materials.

A more comprehensive list of media will be sent out before the first session.

The course will aim to help artists of all abilities to approach their drawing and painting of landscape and natural forms in a looser, more personal and expressive way.

Each session will start with warm-up drawing exercises, usually working directly from observing natural forms. This will then lead us into a variety of work, as we explore the potential of different media and drawing tools.

If you are wondering whether or not these sessions will be helpful for you, the feedback from a couple of regular students might persuade you.....

"I love your approach to expanding and nurturing creative thought and process" - Carol

"I have really enjoyed joining the class, even though I am a complete beginner.  It is something I have wanted to do for a while but felt a bit intimidated.  The group is very welcoming and supportive". - Jenny.

Please call or email to book a place, or for any further information.

Drawing

I take a sketchbook when I walk, sometimes using colour, but mostly just observing, committing details to memory. I don't tend to refer to these drawings when I make paintings, however.
